A couple of months ago we purchased a juicer, and surprisingly, it has become one of my 3 year old’s favorite activities. Multiple times per day, he will run up to me and exclaim, “Let’s make juice!” Here are some of the benefits we have enjoyed from having our juicer:
Creativity: Isaiah loves creating new and interesting recipes – pretty much anything goes,
depending what’s in our fridge – and seeing what each new concoction will taste like. Sometimes it is something simple like apple juice, and other times we combine a variety of fruits and veggies.
Confidence & curiosity: Isaiah takes great pride in being able to assemble the juicer (with supervision, of course), as well as do the actual juicing (again, with supervision). He loves to see how all the parts fit together and is fascinated by how it works.
Vegetable Consumption: Juicing has many health benefits, but I primarily appreciate it as a way to get our son to eat vegetables that he wouldn’t usually try. Since it is exciting to experiment with new combinations, and the fruit will usually dampen the taste of less favored vegetables, eating more and a greater variety of vegetables has become less of a struggle.
Quick and Easy: Juicing also makes a quick and nutritious snack or easy addition to a meal when I don’t have a lot of time to prepare a vegetable dish. It is surprisingly filling, packed full of vitamins and nutrients, and gives a quick energy boost during an afternoon energy lapse.
Economical: Juicing is also a great way to use up fruits and veggies that are slightly past their prime, but not yet rotten. The ‘less fresh’ taste isn’t really noticed when juiced, and we are finding that we have a lot less waste than previously so.
Our juicer has been one of the best additions to our kitchen, and I look forward to continuing to create juice as a family. Here’s a recipe that we enjoyed this morning.
1 small pineapple
2 carrots
1 pear
10 – 12 strawberries
Makes 2 very large glasses, or 4 small. Enjoy!

How true! We just got a fancy new blender that we’ve been making our own juice in, and our 3.5yo is also fascinated by the process. The juice itself – that’s a different story – Kieran has some sensory issues, but he’s trying to overcome them since he’s tasted some delicious juice that he’s helped make

What a great idea! I love the thought that my picky eater might actually try some veggies this way … must try.
If all else fails, at least I’ll get to drink something tasty!

Great idea! We’ve been making green smoothies and my 1 year old loves it.
What a fabulous idea, I should dust off our juicer and revisit making our own. I make blender smoothies but I think using the juicer might make it interesting for the kids and get them to drink more!! Thanks for sharing your ideas.

Yum! That’s great, especially in summer!
My son got so into juicing when I first started and then again when we got a new one. The enthusiasm did fade after a while though, and now it comes and goes — both for drinking and for “plunging.” I’m on a special diet and can only get my raw veggies through juice, so my son (now five) sometimes makes it for me as a favor/help.
My husband has become the master of the Vitamix for smoothies — you can add zucchini and cuke to berries and ice and it’s delicious! My son also will flip if he has straight juice but the sugar is buffered when the whole food is in a smoothie, fiber and all.
Thanks for that vitamix idea – i think i’ll try it.

What a wonderful activity for your 3-year old! It’s great for eye-hand coordination and should also help develop a love of fruits and vegetables. Kids love to do real work, and this is awesome work to do!
thanks for sharing your lovely sounding recipe. I like the idea of juices but never know what to mix or in what quantities; so I’ll try your suggestion. What a lovely way to create with your child – healthy too!
That recipe sounds yummy. Making fresh fruit juice or vegetable juice is so easy. Healthy too.
We have always had to water down any fruit juice when we had it, as my children think it’s too sweet. However, they really enjoy a mix of fruit and vegetable juices.
I agree – the pure fruit ones are pretty sweet – even some veggies can be a bit sweet.
